By now, I’m sure you know how much I like to include natural components in my beauty routine. After having wrote about avocado, coconut oil, homemade facial scrubs and green tea, I realized that lemons warrant a well-deserved place on the blog as well. We all love a delicious lemon chicken or a chill lemonade on a hot day, but believe me your hair and skin love lemons even more! Why do we need to go for expensive beauty products made up of unknown constituents when the most efficient ingredients are already lying in the kitchen?
Here are 10 reasons why lemons are your skin’s best friend:
- Lemon is a natural skin brightener
Since lemons are rich with vitamin C and citric acid, they can help to brighten and lighten your skin when used over time. They also boost up collagen production, act as an antioxidant, and lighten age spots, dark spots or a fake tan gone wrong. Allow the lemon juice to stay on your skin for about 15 minutes and rinse thoroughly afterwards. However, it is more advisable to use this treatment at night as sun exposure can cause adverse reactions. And of course, never go out in the sun without your sunscreen!
- Make your own clarifying moisturizer using lemon
If you want a nice hydrated skin, it’s essential not to skip an effective night cream. Mix a few drops of coconut water with a few drops of lemon juice. The coconut water will hydrate your skin while the lemon juice will clear and brighten it.
- Get rid of the ugly blackheads
Yes, lemons can do that! Lemons have anti-bacterial properties which can help to treat acne. They promote the elimination of excess oil on the skin and fight annoying blackheads. At night, rub a bit of lemon on your skin and let it set for 10 minutes. Remove it with plenty of cold water and you’re done! Again, this should be done at night to prevent sun exposure.
- Natural bleach for the elbow, knee and armpits.
This one is really effective and I love it! Sometimes, the elbows, knees and armpits are regions of the body where the skin tends to get dark. To prevent these dark spots, just rub these areas with half of a lemon. And guess what, lemon’s citric acid is responsible for killing bacteria that causes bad odors, so it can work as an emergency deodorant as well.
- Whiten your teeth
You want a simple remedy to get white shining teeth without going to the dentist? Just mix several teaspoons of baking soda with enough fresh lemon juice to make a paste. Put a good amount of the paste on your toothbrush and apply on your teeth. Leave it for only one minute and rinse off to avoid the acid affecting the enamel. And finally, get ready to give your brightest smile!
- Lip exfoliator
For a beautiful pout and lipstick-ready lips, it is important to get rid of dead skin cells and dry skin. Nothing better than lemon juice to solve this problem! Before bedtime, just apply a little amount of lemon juice on your lips and wash it off in the morning. Of course, if you have severe chapped lips or any cuts, don’t even think about it!
- For highlighted hair
This is one of my favorites! It’s an alternative for soft highlights on the hair without going to the hairdresser. To get those highlights and to make your hair shiny, apply lemon juice to your hair and expose it to the sun. This will score you a sun-kissed color! With sun exposure, the lemon will give your hair light and golden highlights. Another benefit is that, lemons help to treat dry-scalp and dandruffs, so feel free to apply it liberally at least once a week for best results.
- Strengthen your nails
Too much of gel manicures can sometimes cause your nails to become weak and too soft. A simple solution to that problem is to use a mixture of lemon juice and olive oil. Soak your nails in it for some time, it will help eliminate any marks, brittle and dry nails to make them stronger. Goodbye yellow nails!
- DIY face scrub using lemon
For soft skin and to eliminate any dead skin cells, make your own DIY lemon scrub. You only need 1 tablespoon of coconut oil and 2 tablespoon of sugar, stir it up and it’s ready! A simple scrub to make when you are running out of time. You can make it even more nourishing for the skin by using honey. Combine: ½ teaspoon of honey, 1 teaspoon of sugar and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice to make a nourishing scrub.
- Make your own face mask using lemons
If you are looking for a good DIY face mask which will leave your skin feeling fresh, clean and moisturized, mix one tablespoon of organic raw honey and half a squeezed lemon into a bowl and apply it to your face for 15-30 minutes. Wash away with warm water afterwards. The lemon will help clear up acne, blackheads or any discoloration while honey is a natural antioxidant and antibacterial.
